Well, I'm finding it hard to put into words how proud I am of all of you after today's prep school championship race at New Hampton. We had Cam in the top 20 in the A's, Dylan riding strong coming back from a crash, Julian hanging tough and Alden making a great showing in the C race, but the special treat to see as a coach of brand new bike racers was the teamwork I witnessed in the B race. Zach strung out the field in the beginning to tender some legs while Peter and Kenny sat in waiting for the climbs for their turn at the front. Once the climbs hit, Zach powered off the front again and, to my astonishment (I was the lead vehicle), Kenny and Peter glued right up and, before I knew it, there were three KMS riders in a breakaway working in perfect paceline formation forging a sizeable lead on the peloton. The three riders traded pace like a well-oiled machine for nearly half the race and, were it not for some hulkingly big riders in the peloton chasing like mad in the final miles of the race, the KMS trio would not have been caught only a mile from the finish line! Might I remind everyone that our KMS kids had never even trained on bikes, much less raced them, before six weeks ago. Not only that, our oldest rider is Zach and he's only a Junior. I can't wait to see what the KMS team does in next year's prep school season!
This post will be the last of the 2010 prep school season. We'll resume use of the site for the prep school mt. bike season in the Fall and then again next April when the 2011 school road season rolls around again.
Congratulations to the team for a great season and special thanks to the team sponsors, including Shebell and Shebell, for all of their help getting the team going!
Some of the kids will continue racing USAC sanctioned racing during the summer. Readers can follow the action at www.woodstockbicycleclub.com.
