Hi all and welcome to the Killington Mountain School Cycling Team! I can’t tell you how pleased I am to announce that, as of tonight, we have a whopping 16 kids signed up for the team! That’s a pretty amazing number for a program that is only a year old, especially for a winter term school.
The KMS Cycling Team is an introductory junior bike racing program. It’s all about just getting started and exposing our student athletes to the lifelong sport of cycling, an outstanding supplementary sport for any winter athlete. Our hope is that, whether the kids take up racing bikes or not, they will fall in love with cycling as a lifetime fitness activity.
This email list includes all team members, parents and other relevant coaches to keep everyone in the loop. Please look for a weekly (at least) update as we go through the racing season. Here’s some important preliminary information about the team and the racing season:
• The team roster to date is listed as follows: (returning members:) Zach Stockman (Team Captain), Kenny McNeill, Cam Price, Dylan Malone, Ansel Dickey, Julian Scherding, Alden Suokko, Peter Vollers, Jr., Tommy Shebell, (new members:) David Schindler, Jake Jacobs, Spencer Smith, Alli Price, Jessica McNeill, Allison Smith and Mika Smith.
• The interscholastic season consists of seven races held on Wednesdays and Saturdays from mid-April to mid-May. You can view all school season-specific race information at www.prepschoolcycling.com.
• Because the school season is fairly limited in time and number of races, the KMS team augments the season with several USAC (USA Cycling) sanctioned races including road race and criterium races in April and May and the Killington Stage Race on Memorial Day weekend. Those student athletes new to racing will be focused mainly on racing the introductory categories at the school races while the returning experienced members will race in the higher categories at the school races and set personal goals for success in the longer, harder sanctioned races. Many racers will continue racing through the summer season and into the fall cyclo-cross and prep school mountain bike seasons. All races are optional and riders wishing not to race are welcome to simply train with the team.
• The team trains throughout the winter on Monday evenings at 4:15 in the KMS gym on the spin bikes. Outdoor team training rides will begin in early April and take place at varying locations between Rutland, Killington, Plymouth and Woodstock two to three times per week. Returning racers will start racing right away on the weekends and new riders will have local weekend training rides to help “get their sea legs” before they hit the racing circuit (if they choose to).
• For team transportation, we’ll have the Vollers Law / Start House sprinter van as well as the KMS saturn and suburbans at our disposal. A cargo trailer may also be in the works to help haul the bikes to the races.
• For clothing and racing equipment, the awesome KMS team clothing has been ordered and should be ready for delivery by late March. For racing bikes, the team enjoys generous discounts on all ranges of bikes, shoes, helmets and other accessories from the Start House in Woodstock (call Dan McKenna at 802-457-3377) and, new for this year, Bruce Faulkner of Bruce’s Bikes, working with Team Captain, Zach Stockman, will be putting together an exclusive KMS team bike package with bikes custom painted in KMS team colors. Please contact Bruce at Bikefaulkner@gmail.com or 802-558-5272 or Zach at thebikeshopvt@gmail.com for further details on the KMS team bike and ordering deadlines.
• All email updates will be copied to the KMS Cycling Team website at www.kmscyclingteam.com, so please feel free to refer back to the team website for all team related information.
If anyone has any questions at all, please don’t hesitate to contact Peter or Greg and ask away. Thanks and we’re looking forward to a fantastic season!
