Some crucial items to take care of in the coming weeks:
USAC Racing Licenses:
Just as you need a USSA license for ski racing or snowboarding, you need a USAC (USACycling) license for bike racing. To buy your racing license, go to the USAC login page here: https://www.usacycling.org/myusac/index.php?pagename=logout and please do the following:
a) when setting up your account, please make your username your first name followed by your last name then the letters kms (e.g. spencersmithkms). Once you have an account, you'll verify your identity via email and then you can log in using the emailed password to complete your registration. WHEN YOU LOG IN, PLEASE CHANGE YOUR PASSWORD TO MATCH YOUR USERNAME (e.g., for Spencer Smith, the username and password should BOTH be spencersmithkms) This way, I'll be able to check your license categories and other information and make sure you have everything in order before the racing season starts. I'll also be able to print out paper licenses which I use to register the kids at the races.
b) During the registration process, you'll be prompted for your USAC registered club. That club is Woodstock Bicycle Club, which you can choose from the drop down menu.
c) On the page nearing the payment section, you'll be prompted for your team name. Choose Killington Mountain School Cycling Team.
d) Once you've purchased your license, please let me know via email and I'll print your rider release and send it to the parent(s) along with the WBC release and a USAC race entry form for signature and return to me.
Bikes:
We need to have bikes ready to go by no later than the end of March, so it's time to think about ordering them. We have many options this year for bikes with Zach Stockman working with Bruce Faulkner on a KMS racing bike and Dan McKenna at the Start House here in Woodstock is working on three different price options for bikes that he carries. You can reach Zach at zstockman@killingtonmountainschool.org and Dan McKenna from the SH at 802-457-3377. We'll be having a team meeting at the end of March where the kids will be asked to bring their equipment and we'd like to have all bikes ready to go at that time.
Other equipment:
In addition to bikes, the kids will need a quality bike helmet, bike gloves and racing shoes. Dan at the SH has many options in stock for these items. Also, Zach may be working on a team helmet from some of his helmet suppliers. Stay tuned for more info on that front.
Team training rides:
Beginning on April 4, we'll be having at least three team training rides a week scheduled around the races at that time. The rides will focus on basic group riding and drafting techniques and we'll likely break into groups to work on specific skills. You'll be asked to wear your KMS team clothing on these training rides for a couple of reasons. First, I find that motorists tend to have more respect and pay better attention to cyclists when we look more "official" in brightly colored team uniforms. Second, we'll look really cool riding as a team all in the same kit.
Races:
Some of the returning riders will be racing right from the getgo on the weekend of April 2-3 in southern RI and MA and then a few will be doing the brutal Battenkill Roubaix on April 10. The first real race the team will be attending as a whole will likely be the Dartmouth collegiate race on April 16 and then a USAC race in southern RI on April 17. After that, the prep school season beings and we'll be focused on those races through mid-May with the exception of some older racers attending the Tour of the Dragons Stage Race in Bennington the weekend of April 30. I'll have exact race dates and registration information posted on the kmscyclingteam.com website soon.
For now, it would be great to have as many of you as possible attend the Monday night indoor training rides at KMS, purchase your racing licenses and work on rounding up your bikes.
Thanks and I'll be in touch with the race schedule and other reminders in the next couple of weeks.
And best of luck with your respective ski seasons!
