KMS Cycling Team Program Detailed Overview

The KMS Cycling Team is a comprehensive junior cycling development program. The team is coached by 1985 US Junior Worlds Team Member, 1989 US Collegiate National Champion, past pro racer and 30- year racing veteran, Peter Vollers, and Development Team Coach, Brad Ramsay. All team equipment and technical assistance is provided by the The Start House Ski and Bike Shop in Woodstock, Vermont.

The program starts with children of young ages with weekly bike rides (on any bike) from the Start House. These rides are organized by our elite and development team members so we have immediate integration of all levels of the team. During the summer months on Tuesday evenings, some of our cubs/kids team members have their first racing experience on the mini infield track at Twin-State Speedway in Claremont, NH and our cubs are encouraged to take part in the many cub-level cyclocross races taking place all over New England in the fall and winter.

From our cubs/kids team, the riders progress to the KMS Development Team. Many team members will also join our program at this level. KMS Development Team members focus their racing on New England prep school league racing as well Eastern Conference Collegiate Racing in the spring (KMS worked with USA Cycling and eastern conference promoters and officials to arrange for any high school student in the country to register a team and race in the well-developed collegiate conference races) and northeast region USAC races, including the entire fall/winter cyclocross season.

From our development team, some of our top juniors graduate to the KMS/Start House Cycling Team (KMS elite team). These riders are heavily supported with racing bikes for both road and cyclocross from Trek and Bontrager from the Start House, free kits and help with entry fees and travel expenses so they can attend international races like the International Junior Tour of Ireland , the Tour de Rimouski, the US Junior National Championships and other top level races. The team also takes part in the full New England cyclocross season.

Many of the riders on both the KMS development team and the elite team attend our sponsoring school, Killington Mountain School, which now offers a full-time cycling program where students in grades 8 thru 12 can attend the school while taking part in the KMS Cycling Team program. Just like with KMS' skiing and snowboarding programs, the cycling student-athlete's curriculum is arranged around their training and racing program to allow for maximum flexibility. The KMS school program is a great way for kids who are not from the Woodstock area to take part in our program and train and race with the team on a full-time basis.

If you're interested in the KMS Cycling Team program, please contact Head Coach, Peter Vollers, at pvollers@killingtonmountainschool.org or call him at 802-291-2419 or KMS Development Team Coach, Brad Ramsay, at bramsay@killingtonmountainschool.org.

weekend plans

Don't forget that tomorrow (Saturday) is the "get acquainted with the team" ride from the SH at 10:30 am. Plan to come a bit early to socialize. Also, for team training rides, all kids must have a spare tube and CO2 cartridge or pump, so tomorrow's a great time to dial that in at the SH. We'll do a super easy ride out past Suicide 6 and back. Everyone's invited and this ride is definitely parent friendly no matter what your current fitness level is.

Sunday is Battenkill. We have Peter, Jr., Brendan Rhim, Ansel and Stockman competing. Plan is to leave Woodstock at 5:30 am, pick up Stockman in Bridgewater at the Olson's store (corner of Rt. 4 and Rt. 100A like last time) and head to Bob's Diner in Manchester for breakfast by 7 am. We'll eat for 1/2 hour or so and be in Cambridge by 8:20 am or so.

Kim's driving the team van as the morning sag for the whole race, so we probably won't leave the race until mid-afternoon. We'll try to be back to Woodstock by 5 pm.

Thanks and I hope to see as many of you as possible tomorrow morning!

Thurs ride moved to Sat

Hi all:

Turns out the team van will be out of commission tomorrow getting a new row of seats and upgraded seatbelts, so what I'd like to do is forego the Thurs evening team ride from Pine Hill Park in favor of a Saturday morning very easy 45 min to 1 hour, get acquainted with your team, ride. Meet at 10:30 am at the SH.

So, to recap, no team ride tomorrow (Thurs). Yes, team ride (easy 45 min to 1 hour) Sat. morning at 10:30 from the SH.

Jack and Carl encouraged to attend.

Reminders:

1) Racing license

2) Pre-reg for Dartmouth TT, Newhouse crit (April 16-17)

3) Pre-reg for Tour of the Dragons (Bennington) April 30-May 1.

Thanks!

training canceled for today

It's looking like rain for the rest of day, so training today is canceled. We'll be spinning at the SH at 5:30 pm if anyone cares to join us. If you do, just call Dan at 457-3377 to reserve a spot.

Weather's looking a bit better for tomorrow, so endurance ride from the SH at 4 pm.

Also, when pre-registering for races, please make your team name Killington Mountain School Cycling Team. Please pre-register for Dartmouth TT and the Newhouse criterium (see KMSCT website for links) on April 16-17 and for those who are planning on doing the Tour of the Dragons Stage Race on April 30-May 1, it's fine to register for that as well.

If you have any questions about which races you should be targeting, please don't hesitate to call or email me. (phone 802-291-2419)

Thanks!

Dartmouth TT registration

One last bit of results from the weekend. I'm told that KMSCT member, Spencer "Bring the Noise" Smith, won the GS at Can/Ams. Congrats, Spence!

While Jack and Carl will be riding the indoor trainers at the SH this afternoon, training is otherwise canceled due to the weather.

Also, the Dartmouth TT (April 16) registration page is now live on bikereg, so please pre-register asap if you're planning on racing:

http://www.bikereg.com/events/register.asp?eventid=13165.

This page can also be found on the KMSCT website by clicking on the link in the race schedule. I'll post race-day logistics next week.

We'll keep an eye on the weather for tomorrow's training.

Thanks!

Plan for week of April 4

We have some great results already to report after this race-packed weekend. In Saturday's Charlestown Criterium, Brendan Rhim was 4th, Peter, Jr. was 6th, Ansel was 8 and Alden was 9th in the 15-18 year olds. In the Junior 10-12's Brook Leigh took an impressive 2nd place. And the old coach had a good race in the Master's 35 taking the win after lapping the field with two other racers.

On Sunday, Ansel succumbed to his flu and bowed out while Peter, Jr. had a nice podium 3rd with Brendan right behind him in 4th. Alden was 8th and Brook was again 2nd in the 10-12, getting back to back Lance Armstrong Race Series silver medals. Coach was third in the Master's 35.

Plan for week:

Monday: easy 45 min ride with Jack and Carl and anyone else who wants to join in at 5 pm from the SH. Please note that this is a perfect intro ride for any of our new racers.

Tuesday: Easy 1.25 hour ride followed by speed training. 5 pm Sunrise Mountain loop. As this will be the first ride for many of our racers, we'll do an easier 19 mile Rt 100, 4 and 100A Sunrise Mountain loop and the kids who have been training already will do 5-6 sprints at the end of the ride near the parking area at Sunrise Mountain ski area (now closed for skiing). For those kids just starting, their sprint training will begin next week. Meet at Sunrise parking lot at 5 pm. For older kids who want to do an extra early lap, meet at 3:45 pm and go ahead and do your lap before the ride starts. I most likely will not be there until 5 pm, so go ahead and ride without me. The extra loop is strictly for the older riders who have experience riding alone. Remember, single file at all times.

Wednesday: Endurance ride. 1.5-2 hours with hills. Leisurely pace in between climbs and everyone at their own pace on the climbs followed by regroup at the top of each climb. 4 pm at the SH

Thursday: Easy 1 hour ride from Pine Hill Park in Rutland. 5 pm. My van will leave Woodstock at 4 pm. Jack and Carl may come. Older kids who would like more mileage should ride ahead of time and then meet us at park at 5.

Friday: rest day

Saturday: For those not racing and can ride alone, do 1-1.5 hour ride. Older kids can do 2 hours plus.

Sunday: Tour of the Battenkill for Stockman, Peter, Jr., Ansel, Alden, Brendan and Brook. All others ride on your own 1.5-2 hours.

As for equipment, all riders should have their bikes ready to go by now. If not, please see Dan at the SH as soon as possible. 802-457-3377.

Please note: First official team race is the Dartmouth Time Trial on Saturday, April 16. The following day is the Charlestown Criterium. PLEASE PRE-REGISTER FOR THESE RACES BY CLICKING ON THE RACE LINK ON THE TEAM WEBSITE.

Once again, if you plan on racing, you'll need to purchase a USAC racing license. Please see the team website for the link.

Welcome to bike season!!
