KMS Cycling Team Program Detailed Overview

The KMS Cycling Team is a comprehensive junior cycling development program. The team is coached by 1985 US Junior Worlds Team Member, 1989 US Collegiate National Champion, past pro racer and 30- year racing veteran, Peter Vollers, and Development Team Coach, Brad Ramsay. All team equipment and technical assistance is provided by the The Start House Ski and Bike Shop in Woodstock, Vermont.

The program starts with children of young ages with weekly bike rides (on any bike) from the Start House. These rides are organized by our elite and development team members so we have immediate integration of all levels of the team. During the summer months on Tuesday evenings, some of our cubs/kids team members have their first racing experience on the mini infield track at Twin-State Speedway in Claremont, NH and our cubs are encouraged to take part in the many cub-level cyclocross races taking place all over New England in the fall and winter.

From our cubs/kids team, the riders progress to the KMS Development Team. Many team members will also join our program at this level. KMS Development Team members focus their racing on New England prep school league racing as well Eastern Conference Collegiate Racing in the spring (KMS worked with USA Cycling and eastern conference promoters and officials to arrange for any high school student in the country to register a team and race in the well-developed collegiate conference races) and northeast region USAC races, including the entire fall/winter cyclocross season.

From our development team, some of our top juniors graduate to the KMS/Start House Cycling Team (KMS elite team). These riders are heavily supported with racing bikes for both road and cyclocross from Trek and Bontrager from the Start House, free kits and help with entry fees and travel expenses so they can attend international races like the International Junior Tour of Ireland , the Tour de Rimouski, the US Junior National Championships and other top level races. The team also takes part in the full New England cyclocross season.

Many of the riders on both the KMS development team and the elite team attend our sponsoring school, Killington Mountain School, which now offers a full-time cycling program where students in grades 8 thru 12 can attend the school while taking part in the KMS Cycling Team program. Just like with KMS' skiing and snowboarding programs, the cycling student-athlete's curriculum is arranged around their training and racing program to allow for maximum flexibility. The KMS school program is a great way for kids who are not from the Woodstock area to take part in our program and train and race with the team on a full-time basis.

If you're interested in the KMS Cycling Team program, please contact Head Coach, Peter Vollers, at pvollers@killingtonmountainschool.org or call him at 802-291-2419 or KMS Development Team Coach, Brad Ramsay, at bramsay@killingtonmountainschool.org.

Dartmouth race pics

Thanks to the Donohues for these pics:

Dartmouth and KMS CLOTHING ORDER MONDAY DEADLINE!

Fantastic job today at the Dartmouth TT and crit. Erin Donahue was the highlight with an awesome solo win in the womens crit! In the mens crit, we had Peter, Jr. in 2nd, Stockman in 3rd and Ansel in the top 6 finishing right ahead of Schindler, who was racing his first race ever! Erin was also 2nd in the TT and Peter, Jr. and Brendan were 3rd and 4th in the TT with Stockman and Ansel 6th and 7th. Great day overall for the KMS team!

-Clothing order: THIS IS THE LAST CHANCE FOR TEAM CLOTHING FOR THE SUMMER. I need everyone to know how important it is for the team to be riding in the same brightly colored clothing on all training rides. As someone who had a teammate hit by a car from the rear and killed right next to me while training in college (driver said he couldn't see the rider), I can't tell you how important it is to wear bright clothing while road cycling (personal injury attorneys actually have a term of art for this and it's called "high conspicuity factor").

Even more importantly, I have found that, across the board, motorists are much more respectful to us if we're all wearing the same kit. I'm not sure why this is, but I find it to be consistently the case. This will be the last chance to order clothing for the rest of the main cycling season, so please take advantage and get that fleece jersey, pair of tights, extra pair of shorts and certainly a pair of team cycling gloves.

Carl, Jack and Eli, it would be great if these guys could at least pick up a wind jacket and Carl and Eli could some shorts and a jersey as well. Eli is S. Carl is XS.

Also, the custom KMS CT-embroidered bags are a great bargain at $45 and you'll be doing me the favor of not having kids bring multiple small bags (Ansel, Brendan) that get very disorganized in the van.

Lastly, if you don't get in on the sublimated trucker's hat, well, then you're just missin' out, hands down!

Thanks, guys. Orders will go in on Monday morning.

Peter

Racing tomorrow!

Please accept my apologies for this additional change but trying to keep up with New England weather patterns is a bit like herding cats.

Looks like tonight's storm is heading south to north so RI weather is looking substantially better than here, so we're headed to the race in RI.

All preregistered riders are welcome including Jack and Carl.

Plan is to leave SH at 7 am. Home by 8 pm(ish). All registered riders are welcome, especially Jack and Carl! VARSITY, JV and KIDS.

We'll then try our Pittsfield endurance ride on Monday at 1 pm from Stockmans. VARSITY.

Thanks!

new team disignations and race plans (note change for Sun!)

To make it easier to know which rides and races are appropriate for which team members, we've created Varsity (mainly older riders with experience), JV (mainly newer and/or younger riders) and Kids (under 10) designations for each rider. Here's the list of riders and their new designations (I'll also post the designations on the website):

Julian Scherding (17)

David Schindler(17)

John Ramsay (17)

Erin Donohue (17)

Ansel Dickey (16)

Mika Smith (15)

Alli Price (14)

Spencer Smith(13)

Brook Leigh (11)

Eli Grossman (10)

Kids:

Carl Gebhardt (9)

Jack Watson (8)

IMPORTANT:

-Dartmouth Race: We'll be leaving the SH at 7 am tomorrow morning to be at registration on the NH side of the Ledyard Bridge by 7:30 am or so. Please bring some snacks and then some money for the subway stop after the criterium. PLEASE NOTE THAT I HAVE NOT YET RECEIVED RELEASES FROM ANSEL, JULIAN, SCHINDLER AND ERIN. PLEASE BRING DUPLICATE ORIGINALS AT THIS POINT AS I NEED ONE FOR REGISTRATION TOMORROW AND ONE TO KEEP FOR COLOR COPYING. VARSITY AND JV

-Due to weather concerns (RI is looking grim) and the need for a longer ride to prepare for Quabbin next Saturday, we've decided to forego the Newhouse Criterium in RI on Sunday and do a team endurance ride instead. Plan is to meet at 12:30 pm at Stockmans in Killington and pre-ride the KMS TT hill and then the 4th of July Fondo loop of 60 miles. Bring some money for a food stop and for some pizza afterwards. VARSITY ONLY

-Holderness, Wed, April 20: Plan is to leave SH at noon, then pick up Brendan and Erin at the 7 Barrell Brew pub at 12:30, then on to the race. So far, we have Stockman, Peter, Jr., Alden, Schindler and Erin on the roster. Please reply to this email if you plan to attend. VARSITY AND JV

Thanks!

training canceled for today

Looks like the rain will continue all day. Try to ride your trainers if you can. See you tomorrow.

Racing plan for next two weeks

IMPORTANT: Due to limited space in the team van and the complicated logistics of registering the kids on race day with no parent present, YOU MUST PREREGISTER FOR ALL NON-PREP SCHOOL RACES ON BIKEREG OR A PARENT WILL HAVE TO DRIVE YOU TO THE RACE. FOR PREP SCHOOL RACES, YOU MUST REPLY TO ME TO LET ME KNOW YOU'RE PLANNING ON ATTENDING OR YOU WILL NOT BE INCLUDED ON THE TEAM ROSTER AND WILL NOT BE ALLOWED TO RACE. [This does not apply to Jack and Carl. I will register them when there's a kids race].

ALSO, AND EQUALLY IMPORTANTLY, IF YOU HAVE NOT RETURNED TO ME THE SIGNED WBC AND USAC EVENT RELEASES (see KMSCT site for links) PRIOR TO THE RACES, YOUR PARENT WILL NEED TO TAKE YOU TO THE RACE. NO EXCEPTIONS. [this DOES apply to Jack and Carl].

Here's the race plan for the next two weeks:

Saturday, April 16: Dartmouth TT and crit. Pre-reg on bikereg (see link on KMSCT site) for the High school girls or boys category in the TT and the Mens or Womens intro category in the Frat Row Criterium. Van will leave SH at 6:30 am. Be back to SH mid-afternoon.

Sunday, April 17: Newhouse Criterium, Charlestown, RI. Reg for Junior race on bikereg. Van will leave SH at 7 am. Back to SH by dinner time.

Wed, April 20: Holderness Prep School Race, Plymouth, NH. Races start after 3 pm. Van will leave SH at 12 noon sharp. For those that need to get out of school early, please notify your schools. If you need a note, just let me know. No pre-reg necessary, but YOU MUST REPLY TO ME VIA EMAIL BY MONDAY, APRIL 18 THAT YOU'RE GOING OR YOU WILL NOT BE INCLUDED ON OUR ROSTER.

Saturday, April 23, Quabbin Reservoir RR, Palmer, MA. 61 mile hilly road race. Older riders only. No need to pre-reg as we've been given free entry and I've already subitted our roster based on previous emails. Please confirm that you are planning on going. Kim will be driving the van as the sag wagon, so it's fine to get in the van if you need to abandon.

Also, Sat, April 23: Gould Academy RR. The Gould race is a 20 mile road race, the 2nd half of which is all uphill. If newer riders would like to do this race, please let me know so that I can try to organize transportation.

Thanks and sorry about the deluge of info, but the season is now fully underway and it's game on!

April clothing order!

Finally, spring is in the air and you can't help but think about biking! The KMS Cycling Team is doing its April clothing order, just in time to have awesome KMS biking gear in time for the truly warm weather of mid to late May. And two of our items, the team gear bag and the fantastically cool KMS CT trucker's hat will be in by next week. So, get it while it's hot by going to the KMS team registration page:

http://www.bikereg.com/events/register.asp?eventid=12296.

PLEASE NOTE: THIS ORDER WILL BE MADE THIS COMING MONDAY, APRIL 18, SO YOU WILL NEED TO MAKE YOUR PURCHASES BY THEN OR YOU'RE OUT OF LUCK TIL THE NEXT ORDER.

A note on sizing: Jack and Carl would be size X-small. Eli would be a small. Peter, Jr. is a medium. I'm a large and Stockman is an X-Large.

Please note that our clothing sales is yet another way that the KMS CT raises funds for team travel expenses without resorting to asking for cash donations. The team raises funds through WBC membership dues, the WBC Winter Fondo, the KMS Fourth of July Fundraising Fondo, selling advertising on the team van and trailer and slight markups on our clothing order. We find that these are fun and somewhat painless ways to support the team without additional and undue cost to the parents. You can show that you agree by buying some clothing online, riding in our fondos and placing your logo on the team trailer!

Thanks all!

Dartmouth TT AND Criterium

Looks like the promotors of the Dartmouth collegiate race on Saturday (April 16) have decided to allow juniors to race in their mens and womens intro category in their Frat Row Criterium. This will be a 20 minute (only 4 miles or so) short and very introductory, beginner level criterium (multiple lap circuit race) and will be a perfect start to the season for team members who have not yet raced (sorry, Carl and Jack are not yet eligible, but Brook and everyone else are).

Plan is to do the Dartmouth ITT (3.75 miles) on Sat morning and then do the criterium (4-5 miles) on Sat afternoon. The ITT should start sometime between 8:30 and 9:00 am, but we'll need to be there by 7:15 am to register. The criterium should start at 12:20 pm.

Team van will leave the SH at 6:30 am on Saturday morning. We'll meet team members traveling directly to the race at the Ledyard Bridge parking area at 7 am.

Please pre-register for BOTH the High School indiv TT AND the Mens or Womens intro division under the Frat Row Criterium on bikereg here: https://www.bikereg.com/events/register.asp?eventid=13165.

For general race info, here's the event flyer: http://collegiatecycling.org/eccc/wiki/uploads/Calendar/20110416-dartmouth.pdf.

I'll know who's going by checking the confirmed riders link on the race's bikereg page.

Thanks!

plan for week of 4/11

Huge congrats to Brendan Rhim for his outstanding 3rd place podium finish in the Junior 15-16 at the Tour of the Battenkill yesterday, and that was after riding the last 5 k with a rear flat tire! This is an enormous accomplishment given that Battenkill is arguably the biggest one-day junior race in the country. Great job Brendan!

As for our other Battenkillers, Ansel rode strong for a 30th place finish in the 15-16, Stockman stuffered from two punctures and a broken spoke and abandoned with Peter, Jr. after about 30 miles and coach suffered the indignity of catastrophic leg cramping after a solo victory attack with 15 k to go in the Masters 30 plus race. Oh well.

Plan for the week:

Monday: Jack and Carl easy ride out stage road at 5 pm from the SH. Parents welcome to join.

Tuesday: Sprint ride from Sunrise Mountain in W. Bridgewater. Meet at 4:30 pm at the Sunrise Mountain parking lot, ride one lap on the Plymouth loop, then sprints on the Rt. 100 straight after the loop. Van will leave the SH at 4:00 pm. Workout will be over at 6:30 pm(ish).

Wednesday: 2-2.5 hour endurance ride from the SH at 4:00 pm.

Thursday: Darmouth TT recon ride. Meet at Ledyard Bridge parking lot (Norwich side) at 5 pm. We'll do an easy recon of the TT course for Sat. Jack and Carl are welcome to join. Van will leave the SH at 4:15 pm.

Friday: rest day.

Saturday: Dartmouth TT. PLEASE ENTER ON BIKEREG IF YOU HAVEN'T ALREADY.

Sunday: Newhouse Criterium, Charlestown, RI. PLEASE ENTER ON BIKEREG IF YOU HAVEN'T ALREADY.

Also, all riders must have a spare innertube and pump or CO2 cartridge on all rides. Dan has ready to go kits available at the SH.

Other races to enter:

Tour of the Dragons in Bennington, April 30-31. Even if you're a beginner, this is a good race as it has a good, short time trial, a very cool downtown Bennington village criterium (circuit race) on a fast 1k course and, although the road race on Sun is longish at 61 miles, we'll have the team van following as a sag for any riders who would like to end the race a bit early. No shame in doing so as this race will be great for experience. All non-kid, non-cub juniors are encouraged to enter.

Thanks!

Peter
