KMS Cycling Team Program Detailed Overview

The KMS Cycling Team is a comprehensive junior cycling development program. The team is coached by 1985 US Junior Worlds Team Member, 1989 US Collegiate National Champion, past pro racer and 30- year racing veteran, Peter Vollers, and Development Team Coach, Brad Ramsay. All team equipment and technical assistance is provided by the The Start House Ski and Bike Shop in Woodstock, Vermont.

The program starts with children of young ages with weekly bike rides (on any bike) from the Start House. These rides are organized by our elite and development team members so we have immediate integration of all levels of the team. During the summer months on Tuesday evenings, some of our cubs/kids team members have their first racing experience on the mini infield track at Twin-State Speedway in Claremont, NH and our cubs are encouraged to take part in the many cub-level cyclocross races taking place all over New England in the fall and winter.

From our cubs/kids team, the riders progress to the KMS Development Team. Many team members will also join our program at this level. KMS Development Team members focus their racing on New England prep school league racing as well Eastern Conference Collegiate Racing in the spring (KMS worked with USA Cycling and eastern conference promoters and officials to arrange for any high school student in the country to register a team and race in the well-developed collegiate conference races) and northeast region USAC races, including the entire fall/winter cyclocross season.

From our development team, some of our top juniors graduate to the KMS/Start House Cycling Team (KMS elite team). These riders are heavily supported with racing bikes for both road and cyclocross from Trek and Bontrager from the Start House, free kits and help with entry fees and travel expenses so they can attend international races like the International Junior Tour of Ireland , the Tour de Rimouski, the US Junior National Championships and other top level races. The team also takes part in the full New England cyclocross season.

Many of the riders on both the KMS development team and the elite team attend our sponsoring school, Killington Mountain School, which now offers a full-time cycling program where students in grades 8 thru 12 can attend the school while taking part in the KMS Cycling Team program. Just like with KMS' skiing and snowboarding programs, the cycling student-athlete's curriculum is arranged around their training and racing program to allow for maximum flexibility. The KMS school program is a great way for kids who are not from the Woodstock area to take part in our program and train and race with the team on a full-time basis.

If you're interested in the KMS Cycling Team program, please contact Head Coach, Peter Vollers, at pvollers@killingtonmountainschool.org or call him at 802-291-2419 or KMS Development Team Coach, Brad Ramsay, at bramsay@killingtonmountainschool.org.

Earth Day ride with the legislators in Montpelier

The team joined the Vermont Bicycle and Pedestrian Coalition for their Earth Day ride in Montpelier last Friday.  It was a chilly morning, but well worth the opportunity to meet Nancy Schultz, Coalition Exec Director, as well as Representatives Willem Jewett (Addison) and John Bartholomew (Hartland).  The kids were pretty pumped as you can see!:

Plan for weekend

Thurs: easy skill-building ride from the SH at 5 pm. VARSITY, JV AND KIDS

Friday: STATE HOUSE RIDE! Leaving SH at 5:30 am (I'll have donuts!), ride with legislators including stop at Red Hen Bakery, then stop for breakfast at the awesome Creek House Diner on the way home, ON ME! Come on guys, this is a great opportunity to show we care about bike safety. Let's make this a priority!

Saturday: two races, lousy weather at both:

Quabbin: PKV to take in team van. Erin, Stockman, Ansel, John, Brendan. Plan is to leave SH at 5:45 am (sorry for another early departure!). For food, I've found that the best bet for these early races is to just pack food and eat in the car. I'll eat lightly in the am and then pound a big PBJ sandwich about 1/2 hour before my race. So, please bring what you like to eat. Kim Vollers will drive team van as sag for junior race. VARSITY

Gould (prep school race): Scott to take in team Saturn. Peter, Jr., Alden, Kenny, Spencer, Allison, Jack. Saturn will hold 7 people (Scott plus 6 racers) and six bikes on the roof and rear racks, so roster is full. Plan is to meet at SH at 9:00 am to load bikes and leave no later than 9:30 to get to Gould in plenty of time to drive the course. Bring snacks and money for subway stop on way home. VARSITY, JV

Sunday: Happy Easter and Passover!

Monday: instead of kids ride, we'll do an easy preride of the KMS TT course at 5 pm. Meet at Skyeship Lodge at 4:30 pm. Van will leave SH at 4 pm. VARSITY, JV, KIDS (we'll take several rests on the way up the hill).

Thanks and think sun!

Team pic at Dartmouth Crit

Results from last weekend

Check out the bikereg results page for the Dartmouth TT and crit and Newhouse crit from last weekend:

http://www.bikereg.com/results/2011/.

Great finish line pics of Erin at Dartmouth crit (womens intro) and coach at Newhouse (Master's 35).

Also, my result reporting was erroneous yesterday. Alden(burger) was 8th in the Newhouse crit with a strong showing and I can't believe I forgot to mention that our 9 year old, Carl Gebhardt, was 2nd in the kids division. Way to go, Carl!!!

Tomorrow reminder:

1) Meet at SH at 11:45. If you haven't had your bike looked at by Dan and had the gears blocked for junior gear limiting, please plan to get to the shop by 11:00 am to have Dan check things out.

2) We'll pick up Erin and Brendan in W. Leb at the 7 Barrell Brew Pub at 12:30 pm.

3) Scotty will have the team saturn, so we should have plenty of room.

Bring some snacks and we'll do the usual subway stop on the way home.

Thanks!

Peter

New KMS CT Asst. Coach!

Hi all:

Just wanted to let everyone know that Scott Smith, KMS grad and father of team members, Spencer and Allison Smith, will be serving as KMS Team Asst. Coach. Scott will be driving the KMS Saturn as an auxiliary vehicle for the prep school series and he will be taking the Gould Academy RR contingent to that race this coming Saturday. I'll post info on that race soon. Welcome, Scotty!

I'm not sure if Scott will look as good in the KMS team trucker's hat as Ansel: http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-NZZWoNlds3g/TazkEJDnWFI/AAAAAAAAUOo/pjkxAzgtj-Q/s1600/trucker%2527s+hat.jpg

Thanks!

Peter

KMS team trucker's hat!

Plan for week of 4/18

Great job at Newhouse crit everyone! We had Brendan in 4th, Stockman in 6th, Ansel in 8th, Jack Salisbury in 11th (first race) and Alden in 13th. Erin was 9th in the Womens race too! Coach won the 35 plus from a break of 5 and beat his lifelong nemesi, Mark McMormack and the blisterly fast Tobi Schultz, in the final sprint. Great day all around but the real joy was blue sky and sunshine and 60 degrees!

Plan for the week:

Monday: Road ride at 12:45 from Stockmans. PLEASE BRING MONEY AS WE'LL HAVE TWO, YES TWO, FOODSTOPS at the Pittsfield and Barnard stores. Also, you will not be allowed to ride unless you have a spare tube and CO2 cartridge (or pump). We should be back to Woodstock by 5:30 pm or so. VARSITY
