KMS Cycling Team Program Detailed Overview

The KMS Cycling Team is a comprehensive junior cycling development program. The team is coached by 1985 US Junior Worlds Team Member, 1989 US Collegiate National Champion, past pro racer and 30- year racing veteran, Peter Vollers, and Development Team Coach, Brad Ramsay. All team equipment and technical assistance is provided by the The Start House Ski and Bike Shop in Woodstock, Vermont.

The program starts with children of young ages with weekly bike rides (on any bike) from the Start House. These rides are organized by our elite and development team members so we have immediate integration of all levels of the team. During the summer months on Tuesday evenings, some of our cubs/kids team members have their first racing experience on the mini infield track at Twin-State Speedway in Claremont, NH and our cubs are encouraged to take part in the many cub-level cyclocross races taking place all over New England in the fall and winter.

From our cubs/kids team, the riders progress to the KMS Development Team. Many team members will also join our program at this level. KMS Development Team members focus their racing on New England prep school league racing as well Eastern Conference Collegiate Racing in the spring (KMS worked with USA Cycling and eastern conference promoters and officials to arrange for any high school student in the country to register a team and race in the well-developed collegiate conference races) and northeast region USAC races, including the entire fall/winter cyclocross season.

From our development team, some of our top juniors graduate to the KMS/Start House Cycling Team (KMS elite team). These riders are heavily supported with racing bikes for both road and cyclocross from Trek and Bontrager from the Start House, free kits and help with entry fees and travel expenses so they can attend international races like the International Junior Tour of Ireland , the Tour de Rimouski, the US Junior National Championships and other top level races. The team also takes part in the full New England cyclocross season.

Many of the riders on both the KMS development team and the elite team attend our sponsoring school, Killington Mountain School, which now offers a full-time cycling program where students in grades 8 thru 12 can attend the school while taking part in the KMS Cycling Team program. Just like with KMS' skiing and snowboarding programs, the cycling student-athlete's curriculum is arranged around their training and racing program to allow for maximum flexibility. The KMS school program is a great way for kids who are not from the Woodstock area to take part in our program and train and race with the team on a full-time basis.

If you're interested in the KMS Cycling Team program, please contact Head Coach, Peter Vollers, at pvollers@killingtonmountainschool.org or call him at 802-291-2419 or KMS Development Team Coach, Brad Ramsay, at bramsay@killingtonmountainschool.org.

Plan for week of 5/9

Fantastic race yesterday at Profile! We had Brendan winning the Mens A in an excellent display of tactics. He had feined weakness by dropping back from his breakaway group on the last climb, but then he shot past his break companions leaving them no chance to join him on his solo victory ride to the line. What's even nicer is that he gave much of the credit for the win to his teammate, Ansel, who had covered many of the earlier attacks from Deerfield so B could save his energy for the victory attack. Ansel then finished a strong 5th.

But that's not all. Our own Kenny McNeill, who has all of two weeks of riding in his legs, came up with the goods to win the Mens B division, again in a powerful solo bid on the final hill. Also finishing in the top 5 was John Ramsay, our ace mt. biker, who took the sandy technical course like a fish in water.

Oh, but wait, as if two wins were not enough, Erin Donohue simply rode away from her field on the first big climb of the Womens A race to win by several minutes.

But, at the end of day, I think I'm most proud of our Mens and Womens C racers, all of whom completed the extremely difficult 25 mile, sandy, bumpy and very hilly course without mishap. Way to go Salisbury, Alden, Mika, Jess, Spencer and Allison!

Plan for the week:

Monday: Kids ride from the SH at 5 pm. Dirt roads. Should be beautiful weather. VARSITY, JV, CUBS AND KIDS.

Tuesday: Twin-State Speedway training race at 5 pm. Van will leave SH at 4 pm. Just like last week, there will be a Cubs/Kids criterium on the infield go-cart track followed by a B/A combined 60 lap points race on the main track. Bring some money for the Windsor Pizza Chef stop on the way home. VARSITY, JV, CUBS AND KIDS.

Wednesday: New Hampton Road Race, Bristol, NH (prep school race). We'll plan to leave the SH at 12:00 noon to give us plenty of time to get to the race and check out the course and new finish stretch. Bring some snacks to eat on the way to the race and some money for subway on the way home. I'll enter all of the kids who have raced a previous prep school race, so only the kids who have not raced yet need contact me to let me know if they're racing.

Thursday: Mt. Bike night. Yes, that's right, we'll be starting our Thurs night mt. biking night with an easy ride from Pine Hill Park in Rutland. Great way to warm up your mt. biking skills for the season. We'll leave the SH at 4 pm, ride from 5-6 and then hit the Ginger Chicken on the way home. Mt. bikes only. VARSITY, JV, CUBS AND KIDS

Friday: rest day

Saturday and Sunday: Right now, we have no races scheduled, but there's a chance the Gould RR may be re-scheduled for Sunday, so I'll keep you posted. If we don't do Gould, we may do a longer team training ride locally on Sunday.

Also, please don't forget to reg for Sunapee, Barre and KSR. For those that may not want to do the long Monday road race at KSR, it's fine to enter the Citizens 4/5 Sat road race and Sun time trial.

Thanks!
