KMS Cycling Team Program Detailed Overview

The KMS Cycling Team is a comprehensive junior cycling development program. The team is coached by 1985 US Junior Worlds Team Member, 1989 US Collegiate National Champion, past pro racer and 30- year racing veteran, Peter Vollers, and Development Team Coach, Brad Ramsay. All team equipment and technical assistance is provided by the The Start House Ski and Bike Shop in Woodstock, Vermont.

The program starts with children of young ages with weekly bike rides (on any bike) from the Start House. These rides are organized by our elite and development team members so we have immediate integration of all levels of the team. During the summer months on Tuesday evenings, some of our cubs/kids team members have their first racing experience on the mini infield track at Twin-State Speedway in Claremont, NH and our cubs are encouraged to take part in the many cub-level cyclocross races taking place all over New England in the fall and winter.

From our cubs/kids team, the riders progress to the KMS Development Team. Many team members will also join our program at this level. KMS Development Team members focus their racing on New England prep school league racing as well Eastern Conference Collegiate Racing in the spring (KMS worked with USA Cycling and eastern conference promoters and officials to arrange for any high school student in the country to register a team and race in the well-developed collegiate conference races) and northeast region USAC races, including the entire fall/winter cyclocross season.

From our development team, some of our top juniors graduate to the KMS/Start House Cycling Team (KMS elite team). These riders are heavily supported with racing bikes for both road and cyclocross from Trek and Bontrager from the Start House, free kits and help with entry fees and travel expenses so they can attend international races like the International Junior Tour of Ireland , the Tour de Rimouski, the US Junior National Championships and other top level races. The team also takes part in the full New England cyclocross season.

Many of the riders on both the KMS development team and the elite team attend our sponsoring school, Killington Mountain School, which now offers a full-time cycling program where students in grades 8 thru 12 can attend the school while taking part in the KMS Cycling Team program. Just like with KMS' skiing and snowboarding programs, the cycling student-athlete's curriculum is arranged around their training and racing program to allow for maximum flexibility. The KMS school program is a great way for kids who are not from the Woodstock area to take part in our program and train and race with the team on a full-time basis.

If you're interested in the KMS Cycling Team program, please contact Head Coach, Peter Vollers, at pvollers@killingtonmountainschool.org or call him at 802-291-2419 or KMS Development Team Coach, Brad Ramsay, at bramsay@killingtonmountainschool.org.

WBC Mt. Bike rides start tomorrow!

Hi all:

WBC will start its weekly mountain bike rides tomorrow, Thursday, April 12.   Plan is to meet at the usual Aqueduct building on Cox District Road.  Riding by 6 pm.    Be there!

Plan for the weekend

First of all, I'd like to welcome KMS 8th grader, Ian Clarke, to the team.  He did his first ride with us today and is already showing great fitness and climbing strength.  Welcome, Ian!

We'll be riding dirt roads tomorrow, so bring your cross bikes. Ride leaves the SH at 4.   If the weather is bad, we'll hop on the trainers at my house so do plan to show up either way.

First kids / family ride is Thursday afternoon.  Kids can ride from school to the SH and we'll leave no later than 4, again, weather permitting.

Saturday:  TOUR OF THE BATTENKILL.   This is a huge event and one of the biggest junior races in the country.  For the first time, I really feel that our team is truly ready to race and, as with any big focal point competition, the preparation is the important part.   There's a real sense of satisfaction in knowing that you've worked hard and done everything possible to be ready, regardless of the outcome of the race.

We'll leave my house at 6 am sharp and head to Bob's diner in Manchester, our usual stop.   We'll eat breakfast and get to the race by 9 am or so.  I'll register while everyone unpacks gear.  Ansel and Brendan start at 10:20, Peter and Alden start at 11:30 and Erin starts at 2:20.  We'll dispatch Coach Hadley to the first feed zone before Brendan and Ansel start and he'll stay until Peter and Alden come through.   We'll dispatch Kim Vollers to the 2nd feed to remain until Peter and Alden come through after which she'll hightail it back to the finish.  I'll remain at the start until Peter and Alden are off and then I'll head out on the course to intercept both fields at key locations to photograph and give strategy instructions.    We'll set up a group text to keep the race support mission in well synchronized contact.

While I'm running around, Jon Wetzel will be helping Erin get ready for her start and I'll be there immediately after Peter and Alden finish.  After her start, we'll all dispatch again to the feeds and I'll be off again to film Erin's race.

After Erin's race, we'll all pack up and head to the Burger Den for a nice post-race dinner, after which we'll head down to West Point where we're booked in to the Econolodge near the West Point gates:

Econo Lodge Near West Point(NY379)
17 Main Street, Highland Falls, NY, US, 10928
Phone: (845) 446-9400

PLEASE NOTE:  EVERYONE NEEDS PHOTO ID'S TO GAIN ENTRY INTO WEST POINT, SO PLEASE BRING YOUR DRIVER'S LICENSES!

We'll do the epic Army TT and the crit at West Point on Sunday and then head home from one very busy race weekend.

Thanks!

April 9 weekly update

Another fantastic collegiate weekend.   Gorgeous weather and epic races down at Yale.   KMS kicked things off with nearly winning the Mens A TT with Brendan in 2nd by only 6 seconds.   Peter, Jr had a strong run in the Mens B TT with 4th and Erin was 5th in the Womens A.

With the brutal course on East Rock Park and everyone pretty tired from the uphill TT, the road race later in the day would surely be challenging.   Erin turned in an excellent 5th place in the Womens A and Ansel rode himself into the ground for 7th in the Mens A after Brendan crashed out on the first lap.  Only about a dozen guys out of 70 or so starters finished with the field in Ansel's race in this very European hill-top finish circuit race.

Despite everyone being well-tired for the crit on Sunday, Brendan adhered to coach's tactics perfectly and came up with a truly remarkable win in the Mens A.  Ansel, our budding field sprinting ace, muscled through for 8th with some very tired legs.   Peter Jr. was also 8th in the Mens B.

Also, HUGE thanks go out to Jon and Kimbel Biele for letting the entire team invade their lovely home for the weekend.   The Easter Bunny even paid the whole team a visit with a massive basket of easter candy outside of their door on Sunday morning.    Just awesome!   See all the photos on the team's FB page.

For this week, I'll be focusing on the kids coming off of the ski season while the core team recuperates for the "big show" this weekend:  www.tourofthebattenkill.com.

Wish us luck!
